Boat and caravan detailing in the Sutherland Shire
Updated October 2026
The Shire is boat country. Port Hacking, Gunnamatta Bay and the Woronora mean plenty of trailer boats in Shire driveways, and every one comes home wearing salt. Caravans cop months of road grime, black streaks and UV between trips. Shire Mobile Detailing connects you with experienced local detailers who clean, polish and protect boats and caravans where they sit, at your driveway, in storage or on the hardstand.
Salt is the enemy, and it does not wait
Every run on Port Hacking leaves salt drying on gelcoat, stainless, glass and trailer. Left there, it dulls the gelcoat, pits the stainless and corrodes the trailer, especially around Burraneer, Dolans Bay and Port Hacking where boats live within reach of the spray. A freshwater rinse helps, but it does not remove what has already bonded or the oxidation already in the gelcoat.
Gelcoat is softer and more porous than automotive clear coat, so it chalks faster in the sun, but it is also thicker, which means a detailer can machine polish heavy oxidation out of it and bring back a genuine gloss, then seal it so the next season's salt rinses off instead of bonding.
What boat detailing covers
Confirm inclusions when you get a quote, but a typical trailer boat detail includes:
- Full wash down of hull, topsides and deck with salt-removing products
- Waterline and hull stains treated
- Oxidation machine-polished out of the gelcoat, single or multi stage by condition
- A marine sealant or wax to protect the finish
- Stainless, rails and fittings cleaned and polished
- Clears and glass cleaned, vinyl seats and upholstery cleaned and protected
- Trailer washed down, a simple, low-cost guard against corrosion
Cabins, carpets and covers can usually be added. Mention where the boat sits when you enquire.
Caravans and motorhomes
A mobile detailer brings the ladders, brushes and water-fed gear to your driveway or storage yard and takes care of the roof, the black streaks down the sides, bug-blasted fronts, awnings, wheels and windows, then seals the surfaces so the next wash is easier.
Mobile, at your driveway or storage
The detailers we work with come to homes and storage yards across the Shire, from Kurnell to Menai. They usually need access to water and power, and room to work around the vessel or van. Shade helps on hot days, as products dry too fast on sun-hot gelcoat and aluminium.
What it costs
Guide pricing only, because size and condition drive everything. As a rough 2026 guide, boat and caravan detailing is quoted per metre or per job, often in the few-hundred-dollar range for a wash and protect, climbing towards four figures for full gelcoat correction on a larger hull. Caravans are priced mostly by length. The honest way to price it is by eye, which is why quotes are free. Get a fast quote with the size, type and condition, and photos help.
Frequently asked questions
Can oxidised, chalky gelcoat really come back?
Usually, yes. Gelcoat is thick enough to take serious machine correction, and badly chalked hulls often polish back to a deep gloss. Gelcoat that has worn through or blistered is the exception, and a detailer will tell you on inspection.
Do detailers work on boats on the water?
Most of the detailers we work with do trailer boats, hardstand and driveway work. Some take on moored vessels depending on access. Say where the boat sits when you enquire and we will pass it to someone suited to the job.
How often should a trailer boat be detailed?
A freshwater rinse after every run, then a proper detail and sealant once or twice a year, typically at the start and end of the season. Boats stored outside near the water need the more frequent end.
Is caravan detailing worth it before selling?
Yes. Vans sell on apparent condition, and a washed, de-streaked, polished van photographs years younger. It is the same logic as a pre-sale detail on a car, scaled up.
